Walsall Wood v Old Wulfrunians

The first XI recommenced their Hunt Cup campaign after a three month lay off when they travelled to West Midlands League division one side Walsall Wood.

On a windy Tuesday evening it was Wulfs who started the brighter of the two teams although keeping possession in those conditions was proving difficult, even for the great Simon Hardle.

Both sides were limited to mere scraps in front of goal as no real noteworthy chances were created.  Then on the half hour mark the referee made a game deciding decision.  The Wood left sided player carried the ball into the penalty area and attempted to skip between Liam Evans and David Thompson.  Tomo put in a last ditch tackle making no contact with his opponent but toeing the ball out for what should have been a corner.  Amazingly the referee deemed it to be a penalty offence and the Wood goalkeeper stepped up to make no mistake from the spot.

From this point on Wood played with a determination that had not been evident in the opening exchanges but, barring a few minor scuffles, there were no additions to the action in the first half.

After some inspirational half time talking from manager Pete Tipton plus a few positional changes, Wulfs emerged for the second half looking a completely team.  They were knocking the ball about much better than in the first half and looked odds on to get back into the game but were hampered by injuries to Nigel Pearson, Joe Nutting and David Thompson, the latter two having to be replaced.

Unfortunately, midway through the second half, a misplaced pass in midfield ended with the Wood forward being left with a clear run at goal and he made no mistake with his finish to leave Wulfs with a major uphill task.

Things were made significantly worse when Stewart Mason's challenge in the area bought about another penalty which the Wood keeper again dispatched with ease.

Wulfs continued to try to get back into the game but apart from a Neil Parkes close range header they failed to create any significant chances and in the process failed to score in a game for the first time this season.

This was Wulfs first defeat since 19th February 2004 when they lost to Sikh Hunters, also in the Hunt Cup.

Final score: Walsall Wood 3  Old Wulfrunians 0.
