Penncroft v Old Wulfrunians

The first XI were on midweek duty with a trip to Aldersley Stadium to face Penncroft for a game that, because of its local derby nature, was being touted as a cup final.

A few changes had to be made because of injuries and unavailabilities,  Wayward genius Jon Hart was restored to his rightful place, Noel Smith made a welcome return and Darren Ward made his club debut.

It was very nearly a dream debut for Ward when, in the first minute, he ventured forward from his left wing back position to intercept an attempted pass across the Penncroft back line and force the keeper into making an excellent save.

Wulfs were rewarded for their bright start by taking the lead in the eighth minute.  Jon Hart held the ball up well in midfield before sliding a pass through for Simon Hardle to race clear, round the keeper and slot home.

Hart was running riot and his fine run to the by-line in the fourteenth minute ended with the ball being cut back to Noel Smith but his goal bound shot struck fellow striker Tony Morrison on the back and rebounded to safety.

Penncroft realised that to stem the tide, they had to put a stop to Hart's marauding.  Big Warren Waterfield attempted to do this by bundling Harty to the ground but Harty's personal bodyguard James Skedgel stepped in to mete out some retribution.

Further chances followed for Wulfs, the best of which saw Noel Smith race clear from the half way line but his shot was well saved at point blank.

Wulfs began the second half in much the same manner.  Two minutes in Tony Morrison produced some good work before cutting the ball back just behind Noel Smith when a goal looked certain.

The lead was finally doubled in the fifty-first minute.  Tony Morrison turned his man well only for Nik Wooldridge to take over and fire in a low, hard shot which the keeper could only parry into the path of Noel Smith.  He guided the ball into the empty net under heavy challenge and was forced to limp off.

The game was wrapped up with a third goal in the sixty-fifth minute and again it was down to the powerful running of Nik Wooldrdge from midfield.  He dispossessed his man forty yards out and charged forward before firing a powerful shot under the advancing keeper.

Penncroft pulled a goal in the seventy-third minute.  James Skedgel made an overlapping run up the right wing, Simon Hardle's attempted pass to him fell short and Penncroft exploited the gap at the back well with a smart finish.

Final score: Penncroft 1  Old Wulfrunians 3.
