The first XI returned to home duty with the reverse fixture against local rivals Penncroft.
Penncroft had made several tactical changes from the team that played a week last Wednesday and looked much better for those changes. Wulfs on the other hand were without the in-form pair Simon Hardle and Nik Wooldridge while Steve Rich, who has recently recovered from a knee injury, had a flight home from Austria cancelled and was also forced to miss the game.
Although Penncroft put up a much better fight, it was still Wulfs who created all of the chances in the first half. The first chance came when Jon Hart danced his way in to the right side of the penalty area but inexplicably opted to pull the ball back to Noel Smith's many chins instead of his feet.
Darren Ward then saw his shot from the corner of the penalty tipped over the bar and then Noel Smith fired over the angle of post and bar following good set up play by Tony Morrison.
The clearest chances came in the five minutes before half time. Firstly an unmarked James Skedgel headed over a Jason Scott free kick and then Noel Smith raced through one on one with the keeper but was undone by Billy Bobble and could only shoot straight at the keeper.
Penncroft almost took a freak lead with their first shot on target on the stroke of half time when a midfielder attempted a cross field pass from out wide on the halfway line but the ball ballooned towards the goal but Tim Tipton was able to back peddle and catch the ball on his goal line.
Wulfs finally took the lead seven minutes in to the second half. They were awarded a free kick which Darren Ward took quickly to Tony Morrison. He carried it to the by-line before crossing for Noel Smith to stroke home confidently.
In the hot conditions Wulfs were happy to settle for a 1-0 victory and defended excellently. The only sniff Penncroft had at goal was a cross that Tim Tipton patted down before collecting at the second attempt.
Five more wins to go.
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 1 Penncroft 0.
