The first XI were just three wins away from securing their third double in the last three seasons when they played host to mid-table Cresconians and they almost got off to the perfect start when Stewart Mason rose unchallenged to meet a Simon Hardle corner but Tony Morrison did well to block his goal bound effort on the line.
Cresconians should have taken the lead soon after when a floated free kick allowed a player the freedom of Castlecroft, but he was unable to keep his header down and force Tim Tipton into making his first of the year.
Wulfs were struggling to get into gear but did take the lead in the twenty-eighth minute. Tony Morrison produced some good work down the left before squaring a difficult, spinning and bouncing ball for Steve Rich to head home acrobatically in to the open net.
With the pressure now off it was hoped that the football would flow but that never really came to fruition as Crescs were working very hard to make life difficult. The only time Wulfs looked like extending their lead in the first half was when Steve Rich flicked on a Hardle corner and James Skedgel ghosted in to slot home. Unfortunately he was about twenty yards offside at the time.
Chances were still few and far between in the second half. James Skedgel won possession on halfway and set off on one of his sortees, shrugging off two players before releasing the perfect pass to Steve Rich but the big mans shot went just wide of the post.
In a near carbon copy of the previous chance, Skedgel again left players in his wake but this time he released Simon Hardle who, although chipping the ball perfectly over the keeper and into the net, was marginally offside.
Wulfs were in desperate need of a second goal and should have got it fourteen minutes from time, Steve Rich raided down the left wing before cutting the ball back to the edge of the area where Myles Fenn confidently rifled home a shot. Inexplicably the linesman decided Rich was in an offside position when the shot came in despite the fact he was out wide on the left wing. Confused? You would be if you heard him trying to justify his decision after the game.
With the game becoming rather monotonous, Pete Tipton decided to insert a bit of humour by replacing Steve Rich with assistant manager Paul Tudor. A few mazy dribbles up dead end alleys, some hilarious air shots and the occasional 'It's a Knockout' style fall to the ground had the crowd roaring with laughter.
Two more wins to go!
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 1 Cresconians 0.
