The second XI returned to action after the Christmas indulgencies with a home game against Solihull Gas and the few extra pounds that had been added to the waistlines certainly played a part in the outcome.

Manager Dave Winzor had to fly players back from all around the world to play in this game.   Shane Evans was flown back from Dublin, Ben Kimpton had to cut short his American adventure and son Rich Winzor had been dragged back from, well God knows where.

Wulfs began the game with a diamond formation midfield which left Matt Gould scratching his head and chasing shadows for the first twenty minutes.

Even so chances were coming for the home side with Jason Scott's distribution from the back allowing Chris Tranter and Jon Hart to deliver good ball from wide positions but it was all to no avail as chance after chance was wasted.

As always happens, Solihull delivered a sucker punch when they took the lead on twenty-two minutes and then doubled it five minutes before half time.

An inspired substitution by the away side saw them increase their lead when goalkeeper Tristan Stephens was bemused by a long range shot when nestled just behind the goal line to make it 3 - 0.

Chris Tranter was then switched to centre midfield and he set about kicking anything that moved, in true mixer fashion.  Manager Dave Winzor also made a couple of personnel changes with Shane Evans replacing Nick Richards and Adam Shermer coming on for the jetlagged Ben Kimpton.  With a settled 4-4-2 formation Wulfs dominated the later stages of the game.

After a multitude of chances had been spurned, Matt Gould decided to swing a leg at a dropping ball only to connect perfectly with a thunderbolt shot which was too hot for the away keeper to handle and Wulfs had a lifeline.

Again the troops poured forward and the new energy given to them by the goal spurred them on to grab a well worked second.  A good ball from Rich Winzor found Adam Shermer wide on the right and he crossed to the far pos where Luke Oliver looked as the he had got too much under the ball but somehow managed to hook the ball with pace past a keeper who could only help it in to the roof of the net.

Unfortunately, despite having the opposition penned in their own half, time ran out for Wulfs and their attempt at mounting an improbable comeback.

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 2  Solihull Gas 3.
