Just what do we have to do to get something from Silhill this season? We felt that we deserved at least a point from the home fixture last week, and this week we were totally robbed!
However, the game began brightly enough. We kicked off with the wind at our backs and throughout the first half restricted Silhill to sporadic raids which were dealt with comfortably by the defence. The only danger came from high crosses, but on the whole we defended well.
By half time Luke Oliver had missed a chip over the goalie, which went just past the right post, James Lane had hit the crossbar from the edge of the box with only the goalie to beat and, to cap it all, the referee denied us two "stonewall" penalties when he must have been the only person on the ground not to have seen the offences as penalties.
Luke Oliver had been particularly effective with his direct running from midfield and Brendan Turner was orchestrating proceedings to good effect. The message at half-time was basically "more of the same please", but unfortunately it was not to turn out like that.
After only about two minutes Silhill attacked down their left side and got in a cross to the near post. Jamie Perkins was muscled out of it and the ball was scrambled in through Tris Stephens' legs. This meant that we now had to chase the game, but it was not easy into the teeth of the wind.
However, although Silhill shaded possession, we were looking bright when getting around the sides. Martin Dalton and Luke Oliver were particularly effective in keeping us moving forward, and Ben Kimpton had a goal bound shot brilliantly tipped round the post by the Silhill keeper (does he play like this every week, or does he just keep these performances for Old Wulfs?).
With injury time approaching we were caught pushing up too far and from a break down their right the Silhill striker, who had been kept well shackled by Rich Winzor for the best part of two games, hit a speculative shot which caught on the wind and found its way just under the crossbar and inside the far post.
Two-nil, game over, we wuz robbed!
Final score: Silhill 2 Old Wulfrunians 0.
