Four wins and a draw in their last six games guaranteed safety for the second XI and it culminated in this fine performance in their final game. The two's have finished level on points with Boldmere, Parkfield and Sutton and only their poor goal difference means they finish below them. However, a month ago things looked bleak and the team would have taken third from bottom at that stage.
Wulfs welcomed back goalkeeper Danny Tipton from his globetrotting expedition. Danny has changed somewhat since he first left these shores with a fair bit of weight loss and a massive mop of hair. As Ashley Postance correctly called it, "he looks like a corner flag with a fur coat draped over it." Welcome back Danny.
Woodbourne had a very different team from last week but they still had some good players but two quick goals half way through the first half knocked the stuffing out of them. Firstly an excellent solo Liam Evans goal put Wulfs ahead and then a bizarre own goal which Liam Evans claimed although two Woodbourne players touched the ball after him, extended the lead.
After thirty-eight minutes Luke Oliver volleyed in from twenty-five yards to make the score 3-0 and just about finish off the game as a contest.
The second half was average fair but an unbelievable dive by Richard Winzor earned Wulfs a penalty which Rob Edwards converted and then Jason Scott, who replaced Danny Tipton between the posts for the second half, saved a Woodbourne penalty after Liam Evans pulled down his best mate!
A late consolation was all Woodbourne could muster and the end of Dave Winzor's reign (although he was on the golf course today) ended on a high.
Many thanks to Dave for all his efforts as second team manager for the last four seasons. His commitment and dedication have been very much appreciated and he will be very difficult to replace.
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 4 Woodbourne Sports 1.
