Old Wulfrunians v Village

With no other games being played at the club on this Tuesday night, the third XI took pride of place on the big pitch and boy did they put on a show for the massing hardcore.

Despite being made to stand around for half an hour as the opposition arrived in dribs and drabs, Wulfs tore into the Village rearguard from the off and almost took the lead on just two minutes when Bhupesh Patel raced on to a ball over the top but was beaten to it by a defender who toed it towards his own goal only for the keeper to fingertip it around the post.

Villages respite lasted just one minute as the next barrage of Wulfs attacking paid dividend.  Ashley Postance found a good position on the edge of the area to fire a shot towards goal which was well saved by the visiting keeper.  Bhupesh Patel followed up to square the ball back into the path of Postance and this time the big man made no mistake with a thunderous volley.

Wulfs continued to pour forward and should have increased their lead on five minutes when Phil Gardner, fresh from his weekend appearance as a striker for the first XI, latched on to a Patel cross but saw his shot blocked at close range.

A shell shocked Village side finally broke the shackles and created a couple oh chances of their own, Dave Scorer standing up well and showing great bravery to ensure the lead remained intact.

The next wave of attacking saw Ashley Postance twice go close to adding to his earlier goal.  Firstly he shot just wide with the outside of his foot after being released by Matt Gould and then shot straight at the keeper when put through by Paul Fothergill.

The boys were playing some sublime football and one such move down the right channel almost resulted in a goal just before half time but Phil Gardner's shot from the edge of the area, with Jim Lawton was shouting 'oh no' as he was about to shoot, was saved by the keeper.

Any thoughts that Wulfs, and also Village to be fair, wouldn't be able to keep up the very high level of football in the second half were completely unfounded.  Both teams continued to knock the ball around like the Brazilians at their pomp and the chances kept coming.

On fifty-one minutes the pass-perfect Mark Tipton picked out Ashley Postance with a delicious pass but, unfortunately for Wulfs, the strikers shot careered into the side netting.

Wulfs finally grabbed the all important second goal just after the hour mark.  Bhupesh Patel sprung the offside trap and flashed a ball across goal for Postance to power home a header at the far post and walk straight off the pitch to watch his beloved Man United get battered by Chelsea.

The lead was increased shortly after when Paul Fothergill carried the ball forward on the right, dancing past three players along the way, before feeding Bhupesh Patel who, with back to goal, turned and volleyed over the despairing keeper.

By now Wulfs football had turned from Brazilian to Leeds of the 1970's as they set off on a passage of play that included about thirty passes without the opposition able to get a sniff of the ball.  Eventually the ball fell to the feet of Gareth Lawton a.k.a. 'The Wand', a.k.a. 'The Puppet Master, a.k.a. 'The White Pele'.  Unfortunately Gareth got too carried away with the exhibition football as he spanked the ball forty yards across the pitch with no Wulfs player anywhere in sight.

It's fair to say the first XI pitch won't have seen a performance as good as this all season.

Man of the match: Mark Tipton.  He must surely be worth a look for the second XI.

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 3  Village 0.
