MINOR CUP MINTY FOXES PHOENIX
At the fourth time of asking we got this game played but it wasn't without a bit more stress. Two pitches, two changing rooms, one of, which wasn't open. No showers or match ball, four journeys to and from the sports club to Anchor Meadow, the cast of last of the summer wine with flags and a whistle and a half-hour delay.
Phoenix started the better team and had a couple of chances but it wasn't pretty stuff. Balls over the top being held up in the wind for forwards to run on to. Blustery conditions meant that any over hit ball that Wulfs played was just running out to touch.
After a very scrappy first twenty minutes Wulfs got the ball down and created a few chances of their own. Paul Fothergill misplaced a shot inside the box and Danny Patrick got caught offside instead of leaving the ball for Ashley Postance to run on to. The first half ended 0-0 with Dave Scorer and Paul Fothergill Wulfs best performers.
The second half started with Phoenix again coming out strongest. A whipped in cross was heading into the net until the Walsall forward tried to head it in but ended up making a good clearance.
This woke the wolf up but with no room for the Lawton's in the middle things were moved out wide for Danny slim line and Simon Stewart to start something. Matt Gould broke down an attack and laid the ball to Phil Gardner who set "the Wand" off down the wing. He passed a through ball about twenty feet in front of Minty Postance but with the keeper deciding to stay rooted to his line, Ashley showed the defender his studs and smacked the opener in.
The second wasn't long coming. Gareth Lawton rolled the ball to Postance who, with a defender trying to take him doggy from behind, dropped his shoulder and flicked the ball into the path of Energize head honcho Paul Fothergill. His first shot was blocked but the rebound was soon nestling in the onion bag.
Walsall's best player pulled one back with a superb shot from outside the area that gave big Dave no chance. The same player then levelled it ten minuets later, latching on to an over the top pass, big Dave half stopped the shot but the ball went up in the air and dropped just under the bar.
Pav Khosla came on and Danny slim line moved inside to add some weight to the middle. Jim Lawton, going up for a loose ball, hanging in the air like a smaller, whiter Michael Jordan created the third and winning goal. Heading down to the feet of Ashley Postance who curled a low weak shot around the keeper into the bottom corner. Time ran out for Walsall but at the fourth attempt, and the end of an ugly game, Wulfs can now look forward to a final in what is for many is the first season of playing together.
Final score: Walsall Phoenix 2 Old Wulfrunians 3.
