The fourth XI entertained high-flying Walsall Phoenix and the game got off to the worst possible start with the majority of the squad travelling three quarters of the way to Walsall - only to be told to turn back as the game had been re-arranged and Walsall were waiting for us back at the club. An easy mistake to make with no-one really to blame other than the Phoenix fixture secretary.
After a 30 mile round trip and an awful amount of traffic, Wulfs rocked up at the club around 2.30pm and swiftly changed for a re-arranged 3pm kick-off.
Things were looking bad from the start with clear daylight between the two sides in the league and Wulfs having no full-time 'keeper. Chris Nicholls stepped up to take the gloves despite a nightmare showing between the sticks for the 5th XI earlier in the season.
The game started off badly for Wulfs going 4-0 down in the first twenty-five minutes. All of the goals were class and very little could have been done about any of them.
Wulfs then battled back valiantly although Walsall should have scored several more times but tried to take the Michael a little bit too much.
Wulfs finally pulled one back just before half time through Adam Hughes' good finish but it was clear they would just be playing for pride in the second half.
The wind, rain and hail poured down as the second half began. It was dreadful conditions but Wulfs were still trying to battle back valiantly.
A couple of goals went in before Wulfs got the crucial second through Paul 'the hit man' Janos - cutting the deficit to only four goals.
The final minutes saw four more Walsall goals rattle in and the game nearly spill over into a huge fight after the plump little Walsall substitute followed through on Chris Nicholls (messy!). Stuart Drury's dad showed the true Drury aggressive streak by confronting the little man from the touchline.
Wulfs didn't play that badly despite the 10-2 reverse and, despite a valiant effort from hero of the day Chris Nicholls, may have fared better with a more experienced 'keeper. I'm sure that Chris wont mind me mentioning that he now becomes the first goalkeeper in Old Wulfs history to concede ten goals for two different XI's in the same season!
Other good performances came from the usual (Ling, Marsh, Skedgel) as well as a battling performance from Sam Cole.
After the unnecessary travelling, the weather and the defeat, as well as not getting laid when I got home - this was one of the worst days of my life. Roll on next week.
Final score: Walsall Phoenix 10 Old Wulfrunians 2.
