After last weeks impressive 4-0 demolition of fellow relegation candidates Glades Atheltic, the fourth XI were looking to go one better against another team facing possible relegation - Britannia Old Boys.
Wulfs started the game very slowly and found themselves a goal behind after barely ten minutes. Failure to close down an eighteen yard screamer from the Britannia Old Boys number six left Ashley Brown with no chance as the ball nestled into the far right hand corner of the net.
Wulfs looked to get straight back into the game with both Mike Garner and Paul Janos going close.
Despite the odd few chances, it really was one way traffic with Britannia Old Boys playing the better football and being the more creative.
Britannia came close to adding a second just after the half hour mark and would surely have taken a two goal lead if it hadn't been for some resolute defending by Nick Ling and then a goal bound clearance by Chris Nicholls. For his troubles Nick Ling took a smack to the temple. Dazed and confused Lingy could play no further part and spent the rest of the game on a beach in the Bahama's, smoking and basking in the afternoon sun, mobbed by his new fan club of ten year olds.
Enter player manager Gary Dimmack, who came on to replace the injured Lingy, and to get Wulfs back into the game. Well that was the plan except no-one told the Britannia number 10 who lashed a shot from eighteen yards straight into the right hand corner of the net (again!!!) leaving poor old Ashley Brown in the Wulfs goal with no chance and the rest of the fourth XI wondering who was going to put in a tackle instead of admiring the build up and the goal.
Wulfs did come close to getting a goal back at the end of the first half, only for Rami Labib's effort to rebound off the crossbar.
Wulfs started the second half more composed after Sheena Marsh's half time team talk and created a hatful of chances with some great through balls from Richard Marsh and some resolute tackling from Gary Dimmack in the midfield.
Despite having more possession than their opponents, and some fine defensive performances from young Sam Cole, the evergreen Andy Carey, Stu Drury and Chris Nicholls, as well as goalkeeping heroics from Ashley Brown, Wulfs lost their way in the final ten minutes of the game and conceded three further goals in the space of five minutes.
With a mountain to climb Wulfs were left thinking what might have been …
THE FINAL WORD:- Wulfs lost to a far better footballing side, but why do teams who's first teams have no game, always perform a lot better than their league position suggests they should?.
Moan of the match:- Andy Carey back to his best in his usual run in with the opposition centre forward.
Banjo watch:- Marshy didn't snap his banjo this week and no-one was subjected to seeing it.
Taxi of the match 1:- Chris Nicholls - if your going to head the ball, use your head and not your face.
Taxi of the match 2:- Nick Ling, dazed and confused and somewhere over the rainbow. Click them red shoes Lingy, there's no place like home....
Final score: Britannia OB 5 Old Wulfrunians 0.
