A tough game awaited the fourth XI as they faced a GNG Smethwick side they had faced mid-week ten days previous. They were the leagues form side and had outclassed a gutsy Wulfs in the previous meeting.
Wulfs were weakened from the start when playmaker Andrew Skedgel had to drop to the bench as he couldn't make the early kick-off due to work commitments. Paul Cole stepped into the starting line-up for his first game since breaking both his tibia and fibula earlier in the season.
The Wulf's adventurous set-up was proving to be difficult to handle - for the Wulfs players that is. The midfield seemed overrun despite Nick Ling marking all three of them single handedly at times.
Smethwick then scored first and a second quickly followed. Wulfs then replied through top-scorer Sam Cole to the dismay of stalwart centre back Andrew Carey. He and Coley were tied at the top of the scoring charts for the 4th XI on six goals a piece before kick off and Carey was determined to get on the score sheet himself. As joint player-manager, he had even considered leaving Sam out of the starting line-up to ensure that he didn't beat him to the brass boot. He would of as well had we had more than eleven players at the start.
Wulfs conceded again before the break and despite a brave performance and another consolation goal late in the second half through Sam Cole, finished the game on the wrong end of a 6-2 score line.
Not even brief cameos from Andy Skedgel and Tom Johnson could do anything to halt the rot. The final whistle of the season was accompanied by threats of retirement from some of the more senior members of the team. After a summer of recuperation, I'm sure they will laugh off the fact they had even considered it!
A disappointing result on the day and a disappointing season results wise on the whole. Despite the results however, yet another enjoyable season with Gary and Andy at the helm - long may this continue!!
I'd like to thank everyone who has made an appearance for the 4th XI this season and hope to see you all next season. See you at the Molineux for the end of year bash!! Final score: Old Wulfrunians 2 GNG Smethwick 6.
