Old Wulfrunians v Rubery

The fifth XI were looking for some bouncebackabilty after last weeks defeat to Wythall Athletic.  Recalled to the side were Joe Caddick and Chris Nicholls with Danny Cheal still sidelined through illness.

Wulfs started the game quite lively, but fell behind after ten minutes when they failed to halt a Rubery attack.

Wulfs fell further behind on thirteen minutes when a blatant offside was missed by the linesman, the referee played on and Rubery took a two goal lead.

Wulfs then started to use Wimbledon style tactics and it was the long ball over the Rubery defence that gave the Wulfs some kind of hope.  Mike Hill converting the chance with a well taken goal to make the score 1-2.

Just as Wulfs got back into the game, Rubery scored goal number three with some slick two touch play to make the score 1-3.

At this stage Wulfs created numerous chances with Ian "Wrighty" Phillips and Gaz "Cartman" Hawkswood both going close.

With half time approaching Wulfs conceded goal number four, and lost their self belief.

Wulfs started the second half the same way as the first, with no belief and it was certainly a day to forget for the stand in keeper Robin Lowbridge.  Rubery added goal number five to make the score line 1-5.

It was then Pango himself who changed the team, dropping midfielder Chris Nicholls back between the posts and bringing on substitute Joe Caddick for veteran Dave Price and bringing on new signing Nathan Anderson for himself.

With Wulfs still not playing with much belief, Rubery added goal number six when poor defending left the keeper two on one and no chance of preventing the goal.

Wulfs suddenly started to play with a bit more confidence, this down to the keepers goal kicks landing on the Rubery eighteen yard box and not having a clue how to defend them.  Suddenly Wulfs created chances and for once pinned Rubery back in their own half.

It was a poor clearance from Rubery that allowed Mike Hill to shoot from at least twenty-five yards out, his shot resting in the back of the net to make the score 2-6.

Wulfs suddenly playing with more belief scored again, with substitute Joe Caddick scoring his first goal of the season after some great link up play with Daniel Cox.

With the score at 3-6 Wulfs created not one, but at least six chances to have pegged back Rubery, only to be denied.

To be fair, in the second half Rubery weathered an Old Wulfs storm.  The score line didn't really sum up how well the fifth XI had played in the second half.  More of the same next week could well see Wulfs picking up three points.

Moan of the match : Rubery No. 17 - Looked like Corey Haim and played like Wayne Sleep.  No wonder Daz Gayle kept kicking him.

Look-a-like of the Match : Rubery No. 4 - Patrick Vieira's twin brother.

Taxi of the match : Pango in the Old Wulfs goal, a day to forget.

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 3  Rubery 6.
