Unity Stars v Old Wulfrunians

After last weeks inspired second half performance against Rubery, the fifth XI were looking to go one better against third in the league Unity Stars.

The day started badly when Robin Lowbridge's car broke down on the way to the ground and got worse as the day wore on.

Wulfs started the game quite brightly and created a few chances but just couldn't find the goal scoring finish.

With plenty of chances missed and Unity players getting wound up by Chris Nicholls' antics of showboating in the Wulfs goal, it wasn't long before goal number one came.  This was down to Wulfs not being quick enough to catch an opposing attacker and Chris Nicholls leaving himself stranded  eighteen yards from goal.

Goal number two for unity came from the spot after Pete Oakley was adjudged to have handled in the box.  Despite the protests the penalty was given and scored.

Wulfs then started to get back in the game, and nearly got a goal back from a free kick that keeper Chris Nicholls made the opposition keeper work hard to keep out (if the ball hadn't have been a sponge it may well have gone in).

Mike Hill and Joe Caddick linked well down the left but Nathan Anderson and Ian "Wrighty" Phillips up front just couldn't find the Unity net.  Even Danny Cheal came close to adding a goal.

Despite Wulfs creating chances they just couldn't hit a cows A**e with a banjo.

Unity's third goal changed the game, a blatant handball that the referee missed twice.  Despite the protests of Danny Cheal and Pete Oakley, as well as the dumbfounded Chris Nicholls in the Wulfs goal, the goal stood.

After Chris Jones's half time team talk of "were still in this boys", things went from bad to worse to disastrous all in a forty-five minute spell which had goalkeeping heroics and clangers, defensive nightmares and a midfield that struggled to compete with the opposition.  Even the forwards couldn't beat Mini Me in the Unity goal who stood 3 ft tall on his soap box.

There was a consolation goal for Wulfs but it was little more than that as the opposition put the game well and truly to bed.

After this nightmare the fifth XI need to put this behind them and hope for a miracle, here's  to a win next time out boys.

Moan of the match: The referee was not quite on the same planet but then if you look like Roland from Grange Hill there's not much chance you're going to keep up with play.

Miss of the match: The fifth XI all second half.

Taxi of the match 1: Pete Oakley  - use of hands in the box is not clever, especially when you stick them out pretending to head the ball.

Taxi of the match 2 : Chris Nicholls in the Wulfs goal, despite his heroics when his team were under siege, running 25 yards to clear a through ball and missing it completely isn't clever.

Final score: Unity Stars 9  Old Wulfrunians 1.
