Despite having a three week break, the fifth XI were back in action this week when they took on fifth place promotion chasers Wake Green Amateurs.
Wulfs had only the bare eleven to start the game and with no sign of re-enforcements they had to play the full ninety minutes with that eleven despite carrying to injured players towards the end of the game.
This was by far the best fifth XI display of the season as everyone that put on a shirt put in 110%.
Wulfs started the game with last weeks fourth XI hero of the day Chris "Alfonso" Nicholls in goal. After conceding twenty goals in his last two outings as a keeper, he was looking put that behind him and boy did he lay those demons to rest.
With Danny Cheal banned for his red card at Sporting 2003, the only part he could play was linesman for the day.
Anzer Nabeel who has been injured since October made only his third start of the season and what an impact he made. Mike Hill floated a lovely corner in after ten minutes, Nabber rose like a salmon to head the ball past the helpless Wakes keeper.
This was just the confidence booster the fifths were looking for and were unlucky not add further goals with both Nathan Anderson and Daniel Cox both coming close.
With some resolute top class defending from Pete "Fattest Bloke" Oakley, Darren Gayle, Joe Caddick and Robin Lowbridge, Wakes couldn't find a way to the Old Wulfs goal and when they did Alfonso had safe hands, or legs, or head.
Wakes did get an equaliser on thirty-five minutes after Mike Hill played a lovely pass to the Wakes forward and he made no mistake in toe bunting the ball into the far corner of the Wulfs goal.
Both sides had chances galore before the halftime break but resolute goalkeeping and defending from both sides kept the scores level.
Wulfs were straight out of the traps for the second half. Only five minutes in Nathan Anderson scored his first goal for the fifth XI with a great finish after some good link up play between Anzer Nabeel and Daniel Cox.
Wulfs were now in control of the game and looked to add to the score line. It was a Wakes clearance from a Wulfs attack which lead to the equaliser. No Wulfs player was at fault, it was sheer luck as a miss hit shot from a Wakes forward was going wide until it got caught by some wind and somehow found its way into the bottom of the Wulfs goal. With eighty minutes gone, Wulfs weathered a five minute spell of Wakes pressure, then they decided to do the unthinkable and SCORE. To much jubilation of the whole of the fifth XI, Nabber was on hand to score his third of the season after some great play by Daniel Cox.
Sensing defeat, Wakes threw on some fresh legs and with two minutes left to play they grabbed an equaliser. Once again luck played its part after Alfonso Nicholls had been left one-on-one with forward. He won the tackle only for the ball to somehow deflect back to the forwards feet .. UNLUCKY !!!!!
THE FINAL WORD:- This was the best performance all season by the fifth XI and if all players don't make team of the week, its a travesty.
Moan of the match :- Darren Gayle wound the Wakes no. 9 up so much, he spat his dummy out and couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.
Taxi of the match :- Robin Lowbridge, unfortunately got in the way of an Alfonso clearance which left him crumpled in a heap. Despite this he still brought the round in the Wakes clubhouse. Nice one Pango.
Final score: Wake Green Amateurs 3 Old Wulfrunians 3.
